We have assumed the restitution of Arad’s reified history from 1918 to 1919 as a natural debt. The project, Arad – The First Capital of the Great Union. The Recovery of the Cultural Heritage of the Arad Museum Complex, was born out of the desire to achieve a ”chronological collage” of a distinct period of Arad from the past, in which we have captured historical, political, cultural events and people who were involved in making them happen or who were just contemporaries with them. The brief review of some aspects, preceeding the above-mentioned years, is meant to bring the reader into the struggling events of those times, marked by the First World War.
At the great ”edifice” of the Union, conceived in the political capital Arad, and carried out in Alba Iulia, the inhabitants of the city and the county have laid a foundation stone. The intellectuals of the rural and urban world – priests, teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc. – mobilized the whole society to support the desideratum of unification of all Romanians in one state. The Transylvanians and the inhabitans of Banat, alike, concentrated their whole energy to fulfill it. The ties of kinship, friendship and professional ones have embraced visionaryism with the concrete realities of history and have served the centuries-long desire of the Romanians.
The incursion turned out to be a difficult one. We have proposed a rigorous, scientific and objective selection – as much as the human being can be objective–, of the cultural goods in our institution’s collections. Selected heritage assets were analyzed by specialists – museographers, restorers and conservators –, they were photographed/scanned, so that they can be used for the database in Romanian and English. The catalog of this project, and the itinerant exhibition, accompanied by the documentary film ”The Story of a Flag” and promotional materials, are the tools for disseminating the results of the project.
We approached the subject with honesty and fairness, with the hope of revealing the truth, which, anyhow, is relative and almost intangible. The project is a plea for the preservation of the heritage assets of the Arad community and for their dissemination to the young generation of today and to the future ones. Without claiming an exhaustive approach, with the regret of not including in this project the traces of all those who contributed to the realization of the Great Union, we are directing our thought of profound gratitude to all those who have left us Romania, as a priceless legacy.
